Welcome to the Sangu Stories you must be hearing about Aris Meeha, our island butler, for some time. It is exciting to see The Ritz-Carlton Maldives embracing the Maldives and immersing in local culture. In this episode, we will discuss in detail about this important role, it was inspired by the Royal courts of Maldives and how the concept came alive with Riyaz, our guest relations manager, a Maldivian national with over 20 years experience in food and beverage, in front office departments and an expert island butler in the Maldives. Mohammed Riyaz:Good afternoon, Mark. It was great pleasure to have some chat with you
Mark Hehir:Today. We're going to talk a lot about Aris Meeha and as we, uh, have, uh, previously spoken how important it is for our legendary service at The Ritz-Carlton, how did the concept of Aris Meeha come to life?
Mohammed Riyaz:Mark, Aris Meeha was first developed up at the initials stage when they discussed and planned to introduce The Ritz-Carlton brand in the Maldives. And they went through and they wanted to have a something which is actually connected and which is a sense of place, and century-old brand Ritz-Carlton's personality, and value of the Maldives to embrace the Maldivian local culture. When it's come to developing the concept and service structure of butler, actually we call it Aris Mehaa is always comes to twist things and put a sense of place in wherever we go. So there were no such a position in today's Maldivian society that related to this topic. And then it start research, going to the books and museums and old the historical evidence that we can gather. And we found out the name Aris Meeha, is the prominent position in the Royal court house in the olden age, in the Maldives. That perfectly resembles our butler service in The Ritz-Carlton. Yeah. In Dhivehi language, define them as a palace staff who serve companion to their assigned member of the Royal household. Aris Meeha me a role similar to what we have today in normal society, such as like I can mention PA or like a chief of staff. Yeah. And again, this Aris Meeha is perfectly resemble the motto of Ritz-Carlton, that is the Ladies and Gentlemen serving the Ladies and Gentlemen. Aris Meeha also, we have Aris Meeha that is gentlemen, Aris Beykalun and Beykambalun. Sorry, is the ladies. So here also it says male ladies serving to the ladies and gents serving to the gents. This is how the Aris Meeha, this name perfectly fit on the Motto and the Credo of The Ritz-Carlton.
Mark Hehir:Wonderful. So when we look at, uh, the historical significance of this role, can you tell us a bit more about the history
Mohammed Riyaz:In the Maldivian history, yeah. There was a Queens, Kings, Sultans, Sultanates in Maldives, Aris Meeha was actually assigned by Prince or Sultan at that time, which especial special ceremony or something that we call it modern days we call it the awarding ceremony or naming ceremony. They do it with Gong. Even for that we have a local name that is called Koli Lun. Yeah. Gong is very well known in Southeast Asia and other countries. Also. Now how the Gong walk going make the noise, right. And it introduce, or it announced to the world this is happening or something happened or welcome, or we have all our attention to you, or may I have your attention, something like that. And then this name was given the particular person who will be the most closest, that who, who take the responsibilities of fulfilling all your requests and getting all and everything organized and arrange seamlessly, which is how these, uh, Aris Meeha uh, how well connected, as far as the history goes over 2000 years in Maldives, they are hoping a Royal court with organized these kinds of committees and these kind of, uh, uh, positions. Yeah. Maldives history actually was buried and gone over the years. Yeah. But when we look back to get almost information's everything, we know that Maldives, is not only the best destination for the holiday. We do have a history as well. Wonderful that's how everything went through.
Mark Hehir:It's so important to us from The Ritz-Carlton point of view, to really respect the history and the local culture. And that's one of the reasons why we've put a lot of effort to do this research and bring it alive every day. Uh, I'm really excited about the Aris Meeha representing a part of history.
